Abstract

In order to improve the quality of machine translation, the valency pattern method is known to be effective to analyze the semantic relationships between verbs and nouns. We compiled about 17,000 patterns referring to example sentences in Japanese-English dictionaries before 1997. These patterns transfer Japanese predicates into English expressions, but are insufficient for transferring idiomatic ones. In this paper, we analyze multi-word Japanese predicate expressions, based on a English-Japanese dictionary that includes those Japanese expressions.

Key words

machine translation, Japanese-to-English translation, multi-word expression, Japanese-English dictionary, valency pattern pair
