Natural language processing systems, such as machine translation systems, analyze input sentences first. The process is composed of two sub-processes, that is, morphological analysis for splitting words and syntactic analysis. The process is very important because the analysis results affect the following processes, so they must be performed as accurately as possible.
This paper describes analysis in ALT-J/E, a Japanese-to-English machine translation system, and discusses problems and solutions. It also describes automatic rewriting that can replace human pre-editing.
