The goals for communication with translation require real-time high-quality machine translation with little or no pre- and post-editing. ALT - J/E (the Automatic Language Translator-Japanese-to-English) is an experimental machine translation system being developed at NTT Communication Science Laboratories. It analyzes the original Japanese, translates the Japanese to English, and generates English using context processing and large-scale dictionaries with semantic attributes. This paper describes trends in machine translation technology and outlines our technologies and applications of these technologies.
