This paper gives a systematic description of how Japanese adverbs are translated into English, based on a study of data about Japanese adverbs in a bilingual corpus. We show how current Japanese-to-English machine translation systems translate adverbials, using our own system as an example, and discuss what new methods are needed beyond these.
