Towards Japanese-to-English Machine Translation without Pre-editing

Recently, several Japanese-to-English machine translation systems have been developed, but pre-editing is required to convert the original Japanese text into a simpler form that can easily be translated. These systems are not suitable for rapid translation of urgently needed information. The authors have proposed a Multi-level Translation Method based on Constructive Process Theory. This paper describes the benefits of this method, and discusses four semantic analysis methods in ALT-J/E. Machine translation that does not require pre-editing is now in sight.
